Today's Church has a huge need for strong, effective leadership. Leaders who only seek to preserve the status quo will fail to lead the Church to fulfill its God-given purpose and vision. Pastors and leaders in the Church today must be individuals who are aware of the times and who lead accordingly. According to 1 Chronicles 12:32, the men of Issachar, in David's day were individuals who knew what was going on. “Of the sons of Issachar, men who grasped the times, with an understanding of what Israel had to do...” reads 1 Chronicles 12:32. (NASB) What traits should today's Church leaders have? In today's church leader, there are five basic leadership traits that should be present.
Demonstrate a sense of safety
Leaders must
be confident in who they are and what God has called them to achieve. Even in
uncertain times, this assurance gives you the flexibility to make critical,
life-changing decisions and take the necessary risks based on those decisions.
Show that you have a good mindset
Leaders must project an optimistic outlook on the future. The agenda for how church leaders and the church see what is occurring now and what could happen in the future is set by a leader's attitude. Leaders should remain upbeat, but they should never overlook serious problems. “Fear believes in a bad future. Faith believes in a better future,” says Jon Gordon in his book The Power of Positive Leadership. Leaders must lead from a place of faith rather than fear. This type of leadership will exude a cheerful outlook.
Demonstrate your ability to keep things simple
Leaders must
give a straightforward, not complicated, message to church leaders and members.
As the leader attempts to shepherd the church and its leaders through difficult
times, this message should be straightforward yet smart. A successful leader's
message should always be upbeat and never condescending.
Demonstrate Nimbleness
Effective
leaders must be able to move swiftly and effortlessly. They must be nimble
enough to maneuver the church and its leaders in the right direction. To move
swiftly, smoothly, and forward, the leader must continuously seek out new ways
to ministry techniques, keeping in mind that any strategy must be consistent
with the church overall goal and vision.
Exhibit a prayerful disposition
Today's Church leaders must never underestimate the value and power of prayer in their own lives and in the lives of their congregations. “Every pastor (leader) who does not make prayer a tremendous component in his own life and ministry is weak as a factor in God's work and is unable to project God's cause in this world,” writes E. M. Bounds in his book Preacher and Prayer. Today's effective Church leaders must spend time in prayer and understand that they are weak without the Holy Spirit's guidance, teaching, and direction. Prayer is the source of this strength. A prayerful attitude is required of a leader.
To withstand
the test of time, every structure must be built on a solid foundation. In the
same way, a strong, successful Christian leader in the Church today must aim to
create a strong basis for leadership, life, and ministry in order to withstand
the test of even uncertain times. Today's church leaders must show these
qualities as they lead by faith rather than fear.
