Engage
Don't just
preach at them or reel off a list of reasons why they should attend to your
discipleship group; instead, love them as Jesus would and begin to pray for
them on a daily basis to guarantee your discipleship group is a safe place. It
goes without stating that God really care for these individuals more than
anybody else could, and so if you begin with prayers and ask God how to connect
with these people, you will find that God has a plan for you.
God will
provide you with insight and understanding on how to be deliberate in all you
do, including the smallest aspects of engagement.
Embrace
It is the
responsibility of the Holy Spirit to condemn individuals, and it is only God's
job to judge them. It is our responsibility to love God with all of our hearts
before loving others as we love ourselves. It is our duty to lead each member
of our discipleship groups into a deeper relationship with Jesus and to model
that, not to compel them to behave in a specific way.
Once you've
assembled your group, it's time to accept one more thing: awkward silence. We
should want people to feel heard and recognized as leaders of discipleship
groups, and in order to do so, we cannot occupy every spare second with our
comments, but rather should allow the group to speak for the bulk of the
meeting time.
Encourage
Encourage one another in your spiritual gifts and build each other up in areas related to this chapter as you and your group grow in your relationships with God and each other. Encourage one another in truth, love, and spiritual development because the Body of Jesus Christ is a magnificent manifestation of how much Lord God loves relationship.
As you grow
to know people over time, be aware of the difficulties and temptations that
each member of your group will face. Encourage them, serve them, bear their burdens,
and trust in Jesus' capacity and power to love one another as He loves us.
Discipleship groups are for everyone who is a part of them; they are a
community and a family that should be engaged and welcomed.
Evaluate
Evaluate how
you individually led and how the time with your group went after each group. Be
truthful. Instead of ignoring their helpful criticism, appreciate the members
of your organization by listening to them and prioritizing their interests over
your own.
